Introduction
Edward Thorp, in his 1962 book Beat the Dealer, describes a simple strategy that makes blackjack an almost even game: if the dealer’s up card is 2 to 6, play never bust; if it is 7 to ace, mimic the dealer. Customs and practices: Shuffling, Shills, New decks. In order to have a moderate advantage over the Blackjack dealer, a player must keep track of the cards which have gone. Or put it the other way: A player must know which cards are still in the shoe. This means that he has to count cards. Winning tactics in Blackjack require that the player play each hand in the optimum way, and such strategy always takes into account what the dealer's upcard is. When the dealer's upcard is a good one, a 7, 8, 9, 10-card, or ace for example, the player should not stop drawing until a total of 17 or more is reached. The player wins twice when they make a three of a kind, AND beat the dealer according to traditional blackjack rules. Ex: Player has a wager on Jackpot Ante of $5; player is dealt 99 and the dealer is showing a 9 as the up card (we will assume the dealer has a 17 overall and the player wins the hand).
I first heard of Beat the Dealer, a dice game, in February 2012. It was spotted at the Turning Stone casino in New York state. I used to think Casino War was the most simple game in the casino, but I think we have a new winner in that category with Beat the Dealer. Rules
- The player makes a wager.
- The dealer will roll two dice and note the total.
- If the dealer did not roll a 12, then the player will roll two dice.
- If the player's total is greater than the dealer's total, then the player's wager shall be paid even money.
- If the dealer's total is greater or equal to the player's total, then the player's wager shall lose.
Obviously it would waste time for the player to roll against a dealer 12, since it would be impossible to win.

How to Play | - Players place bets by putting the desired number of chips in the circle in front of their seat. - The dealer deals two cards face up to each player. The dealer receives one card face up and one face down. - The dealer asks each player, in turn, whether they want to hit or stand. - Base your decision on the assumption that the dealer has a card worth 10 points in the hole. - Indicate that you want a hit by tapping the table or making a motion to beckon another card (as if motioning someone to “come on back”). Continue until you desire no more cards. Doubling Down | You are allowed to double your bet after receiving your first two cards. You do this by placing the additional chips next to your original bet. If you decide to do this, you receive only one additional card. |
Splitting | If you receive two cards of the same number, you can split them into two separate hands. Do this by placing another equal bet alongside your first bet. The dealer will separate your cards and give you an additional card to make each one a complete hand by itself. You will then play each hand separately as you normally would. |
Insurance | If the dealer’s face up card is an ace, he will offer players the option of buying insurance. If you choose to do so you can then wager half your original bet (in addition to it) that the dealer does have Blackjack. If he does, your insurance is paid 2 to 1 but your original bet is lost (meaning you break even for the hand). If he does not have Blackjack, you lose your insurance. |
Even Money | If you have Blackjack and the dealer has an ace showing, the dealer will offer you even money for your Blackjack (instead of 3 to 2). If you do not take it and the dealer also has Blackjack, you will have a push just like normal. |
